Growing up in Orland Park

The Comparison Trap Is Real

Orland Park teens head to schools like Carl Sandburg High School and Victor J. Andrew High School in District 230, after coming up through Orland School District 135. They grow up with plenty of opportunity, from Orland Square Mall to packed school calendars.

Add a phone full of highlight reels, and it’s easy for a teen to feel like everyone else is prettier, smarter, more popular or more put together. That constant comparison can feed anxiety and chip away at self-esteem, often without a parent seeing it happen.

The good news is that self-esteem can be rebuilt. Therapy helps teens notice the comparisons, question them and start treating themselves with more kindness.

What it can sound like

The Thoughts Behind the Comparison

Here are the kinds of thoughts that keep teens stuck, and how we help them shift.

“Everyone Else Has It Figured Out”

Social media shows the best moments, never the whole story. We help teens see the gap between someone’s feed and their real life, and stop measuring themselves against a highlight reel.

“If I’m Not the Best, I’m Failing”

All-or-nothing thinking turns good into not good enough. Using CBT, teens learn to catch these thoughts and find a more balanced view.

“I’m So Stupid”

Harsh self-talk can become a habit. Compassion-focused therapy helps teens talk to themselves the way they’d talk to a good friend.

“I Have to Keep Everyone Happy”

Some teens bend over backwards to avoid letting anyone down. We work on boundaries, speaking up and getting through the discomfort of saying no. Read more about people pleasing.

Insurance and cost

Using Insurance or Paying Privately

Every therapist on our team is in-network with Aetna PPO, Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO, and Cigna and Evernorth. As a courtesy, we check your benefits before your first session. Have UnitedHealthcare or UMR? Call us and we will check your plan and walk through your options.

Prefer to pay privately? The first assessment is $200 and ongoing sessions are $150. When you pay cash without using any insurance, there is no formal diagnosis or set number of sessions on file, which some families appreciate. If you would rather use out-of-network benefits, we can give you a Superbill to send in instead.

Orland Park questions

Questions From Orland Park Parents

Social media isn’t the only cause, but constant comparison can feed anxiety and low self-esteem. We don’t lecture teens about their phones. We help them notice how certain apps and accounts make them feel, then decide what to do about it.

Watch for harsh self-talk, avoiding things they used to enjoy, needing lots of reassurance, or comments like “I’m ugly” or “I’m stupid” that come up often. If it has been going on for weeks and is affecting school or friendships, it’s a good time to reach out.

Our office is at 100 Batson Court, Suite 206 in New Lenox. LaGrange Road (US-45) and I-80 connect Orland Park to New Lenox, and there is a parking lot right outside. We also see families from nearby Tinley Park, Mokena and Homer Glen.

Not at all. Therapy isn’t just for crisis moments. Many teens come in to build confidence and coping skills before things get harder.

Danielle helps teens with anxiety, big emotions, behavior and low self-esteem, and Sidra works with kids and teens ages 5 to 17 on anxiety, social skills and big feelings. Alexandra also specializes in anxiety and self-esteem. Tell us a little about your teen, and we’ll match you with the right person.

Sometimes medication is worth considering alongside therapy. That decision is made with your child’s therapist and a doctor or psychiatrist, and we can refer you to trusted professionals.
