Who We Help

We work with teens, young adults, and adults at every stage. Many families come to us because their teenager is struggling with anxiety, school stress, or social pressure. Young adults come when they feel stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure of their next step. And many of our adult clients first reached out because of their child, then realized they could benefit from having their own space to talk.

No matter your age, our approach is the same: we get to know you for who you actually are, not just what you’re going through. Then we build a plan together that fits your life, your goals, and your pace.

Frequently Asked Questions

Trust your gut, you know your child best. Some signs to look for include persistent sadness or anxiety, withdrawal from friends or activities they used to enjoy, declining grades, excessive worry, frequent mood swings, unexplained physical symptoms, or difficulty coping with life changes. Therapy is not just for crisis situations. It can also be a proactive step to help your teen build coping skills and confidence before things escalate.

Not at all. Your teen’s first session is simply about getting to know each other. We spend time building a connection and helping them feel comfortable. They share what they are ready to share, at their own pace, in a welcoming judgment-free space. No pressure, no rushing.

For teens 12 and older, confidentiality laws apply and your teen has the right to privacy in their sessions. We encourage teens to share updates with their parents themselves as this builds communication and confidence. We can provide general progress updates and will always notify you if there is a safety concern. For children under 12, we provide updates at the end of each session.

This is more common than you might think. We encourage parents to have an open conversation with their teen beforehand, normalize therapy, and let them know it is their space, not a punishment. Sometimes knowing that sessions are confidential and that they will not be forced to talk about anything they are not ready for helps ease their resistance. Reach out to us, and we can help guide that conversation.

We work with teens, young adults, and adults dealing with social anxiety, school anxiety and school refusal, test anxiety, performance anxiety, separation anxiety, panic attacks, generalized worry, and overthinking or racing thoughts. We also see clients with OCD and eating disorders, though if those conditions need a higher level of support, we’ll be upfront about that and help you find the right fit. Anxiety is at the core of what we do at Davis-Smith Mental Health, and we use EMDR and CBT to help clients work through it.

We are at 100 Batson Court, Suite 206, New Lenox, IL 60451. We serve families from Joliet, Mokena, Frankfort, Lockport, Tinley Park, Orland Park, Homer Glen, and the wider Will County area. We also offer telehealth sessions for clients anywhere in Illinois.

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is one of the most researched and effective treatments available for anxiety, trauma, and overwhelming emotions. EMDR helps the brain reprocess difficult memories and experiences that are keeping you stuck, so they stop triggering the same intense reactions. It is a core part of our approach at Davis-Smith Mental Health, and our trained therapist uses it with teens, young adults, and adults.

Yes. We are in-network with Aetna PPO, BCBS PPO, and Cigna/Evernorth. We also offer self-pay options and can provide a Superbill for out-of-network benefits. Our initial assessment is $200, and ongoing sessions are $150. Contact us if you have questions about your specific plan.

Both. We offer in-person sessions at our New Lenox office as well as secure teletherapy throughout Illinois. Many clients switch between the two based on what works best for them week to week. We recommend coming in person for your first session when possible to help build that initial connection.

Every teen is different. Some clients make significant progress in a few months, while others find ongoing support valuable in the longer term. We typically recommend starting with weekly sessions to build momentum and then adjusting frequency together as progress is made. Our goal is always to help your teen reach a point where they feel confident and capable on their own.
